It Is Finished: What Jesus’ Last Words on the Cross Really Mean
Share
“It is finished.”
Three words.
An eternal weight.
The crucifixion of Jesus wasn’t just an episode of extreme physical pain. It was the conclusion of a divine plan that began before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:19-20).
1. What does “It is finished” mean?
This phrase appears in John 19:30:
“When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished.’ Then He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”
The Greek word used here is “Tetelestai”, meaning: completed, fulfilled, accomplished, paid in full. It was commonly used to indicate that a debt had been fully paid. Jesus was declaring that the price had been paid — sin was forgiven, separation was overcome, redemption was secured.
2. The veil was torn
“At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split…”
— Matthew 27:51
The temple veil, which separated the Holy of Holies from the people, was torn from top to bottom — symbolizing that access to God was now open. Jesus had become our eternal High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-16).
3. The earth trembled
“When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, ‘Surely he was the Son of God!’”
— Matthew 27:54
The creation reacted. Darkness covered the land (Luke 23:44-45), the earth shook… because the Creator was dying for His creation.
4. This was not defeat — it was fulfillment
“The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord…”
— John 10:17-18
Jesus chose the cross. He completed the mission. He conquered — even when it looked like defeat.
5. A final look toward the Father
On the cross, Jesus looked toward the heavens with pain — but also with peace. As if saying, “Father, it’s done. I went all the way.”
6. Application: What does this mean for me?
- The debt is paid.
- The way is open.
- The sacrifice was enough.
- It is finished.
But... are we living as those who truly believe this?
Invitation to reflect
Today, at the foot of the cross, look up with gratitude.
Remember the eyes of Jesus — and what He said.
“It is finished.”
The price was paid.
For me.
For you.
Forever.
